OSHA has finalized a standard on the transmission of bloodborne pathogens in the workplace. Medical/surgical and other employers must take action in order to comply. The standard gives employers a limited amount of time to bring themselves into compliance and the clock is already ticking. There are several reasons why an employer will want to ensure strict compliance with the standard: Compliance will avoid stiff fines and penalties. Transmission of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to medical/surgical personnel is avoidable. The employer may face significant financial liability if a worker is infected in the workplace. Once a medical/surgical worker becomes infected with HBV or HIV, ethical (and potentially legal) disclosure obligations may effectively prevent the m edical/surgical provider from providing medical/surgical services.
